Kids Are Awesome

Kids are awesome. I don’t have any kids of my own ( well I have a dog ) but have a bunch of nieces and nephews. When I’m around them, seems like I forget about all the crazy things going on in the world right now. I dive in, something takes over me and I start acting like a kid myself. I use to joke with my nephew Carter that I was a kid his age trapped inside of an adult body ( he believed it when he was a bit younger, but not now haha ). Needless to say, Kids Day at the lounge was so much fun! Kids bring us so much joy and I’m glad we were able to provide this type of experience for them at the lounge! While you’re reading this, it’s recommended that you listen to the Disney Movie playlist on Spotify to set the tone.

How awesome is Tiffany Noelle and Appalachian Books? We can’t thank them enough for helping us coordinate the fun for kids. Also, I shouldn’t forget about William who is a medical student from LMU that volunteered his time to help! William frequents the shop to study. Appalachian Books is just a stone's throw away from the lounge, and they are great people who have been excellent neighbors. Much like us at Lincoln Road, they want to see downtown become a vibrant place. They have a unique model where people donate books to their store and then they sell them for just $1! It was great to see parents and kids take home so many good books! Such a cool spot, so if you haven’t been there, stop by downtown and check it out at 716 Park Ave, Norton, VA.

Tiffany is super creative and passionate about Appalachian Heritage. She recently taught at a kids camp about the history of Appalachian Toys and Games. She showed kids how to make dolls out of corn husks! During the Great Depression, a lot of families in rural Appalachia made these dolls to sell as a way to make income. Look at how awesome these turned out! I tried to get the kids to sell them to their parents but sidewalk chalk caught their eye.

Wouldn’t you just love to know what’s going on in those brains?! Give them something to draw with, a little bit of direction and watch the magic happen. It’s so fun seeing what they create when their imaginations take their focus. Maybe we should spend more time imagining and creating than scrolling on social media.

Experiences like this are one of the many reasons why we have a coffee lounge in downtown. It’s a way to bring people together, experience something new and meet new people. Thank you to all that brought their kids or grandkids out to enjoy some time together. We all had so much fun and can’t wait to do it again soon!
